I've always felt weirdly about the fascination with art done "by ballpoint pen." I think it must play into the misconception that artistic skill is some sort of mystical manifestation and look! A hero arrives to demonstrate that it can be done with ordinary materials!! I can understand (high school) art students becoming enamored of this rather pedestrian discovery but have a harder time getting my head around Serious Artists using it as a tool unless they are out to exploit the gimmick factor. Your everyday office pen has some pretty sucky ink, both in terms of longevity as well as performance. I'm sure you could trade up but by the time you got a nicely working tool you'd be up in the same strata as art pens. Meanwhile, there are guys still working with fusty old techniques whose art will last millenia but will never generate the same fifteen minutes of buzz. I mean, yeah, neat, but why dontcha go ahead and croquill somethin' if you really want my lovin...

We must share a lawn, Ogre. Also, I'll point out that this kind of contextless naturalistic attempt at photorealism is pretty much the hallmark of a teenager learning to draw. This is the learning-a-skill stage.
