This American Airways promo from 1933 is fairly stunning, not only for the casual sexism and racism it exhibits, but the actual gushing over the features of the Curtiss Condor.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.134126-5301012Fri, 22 Nov 2013 22:38:54 -0800pjernBy: islander

The same outfit, Dudley Pictures, that produced the TWA promo also did a travelogue of London.

The 1933 film is superior as a work of art to the 1955 film. It looks like Hollywood talent not just corporate PR. Decent actors, good script, good sets. As context, prior to Lindbergh's 1927 flight across the Atlantic, the US had an almost non-existence passenger airline industry. He single-handily stoked American popular interest in commercial flight. It was a mania really. The 1933 film is a direct heir of Lindbergh.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.134126-5301219Sat, 23 Nov 2013 08:43:25 -0800stbalbachBy: ROU_Xenophobe

You could get a lot more legroom if you were willing to pay 1955 ticket prices. An LA-New York round trip looks like it would cost somewhere north of $2000 in 2013 dollars, or about double what a first-class ticket costs today.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.134126-5301225Sat, 23 Nov 2013 08:54:05 -0800ROU_XenophobeBy: languagehat

That was a nostalgic thrill. I was in NYC for a visit as a kid just a few years after this was made, and moved there at the start of the '80s; it's amazing how much was still the same after a few decades. Baseball notes: interesting that Bill said "the Yankee Stadium"; very unnatural to say "playing one of their rivals"—in real life you'd name the team. (I suppose if one examined the clip closely one could figure out which team it was.)
Thanks for the post!comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.134126-5301231Sat, 23 Nov 2013 08:57:23 -0800languagehatBy: TrialByMedia

Not sure whether travelfilmarchive is putting the timecode stamp on there as a watermark or they don't know how to switch it off on their videotape machine. Great videos, but the TCR thing is distracting.

On the other hand, in terms of the service and amenities you get today, it's about even. I actually paid first class a few years ago flying domestic on Delta and would not do it again.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.134126-5301475Sat, 23 Nov 2013 14:32:56 -0800crapmaticBy: The Whelk

Okay, wait. When Bill is waiting to meet Sally at Idlewild, he is standing underneath a clock that reads 12:00 and it's bright sunlight outside, i.e., noon. The businessman uses the telephone [1:33]
And the grave-digger puts on the forceps
The stone mason does all the work
The barber can give you a haircut
The carpenter can take you out to lunch
At the other end of your telephone, you'll find a trained staff of employees that'll make you glad you're flying Americancomment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.134126-5302289Sun, 24 Nov 2013 10:34:41 -0800morganwBy: telstar

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
