Bellyflopping penguins (slyoutube) Photographer Paul Nicklen, in the Ross Sea: "It became quite comical to see hundreds of penguins flying out of the water and knocking the air out of themselves when they landed on their bellies. I felt a little bit sorry for them, but they were fine. This is what their bodies are designed to do. It was one of the coolest things I've seen in my career."

The BBC did a nature show about penguins where they set up dummy penguins in the middle of the flock to catch all the footage they could; they got enough slips-and-falls that they put it together into its own awesome sequence.

Penguins are the greatest. The best birthday present I ever got was a card from my partner that said let's go meet a penguin. It was awesome and I would love to do it again at some point and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is ever going to be near Mystic Aquarium. Gray-Silver was a hell of a host.

I am a swimmer, and I just want to say that I want to be able to get out of the water like those penguins so bad... it would blow folks away at the lake if I could rocket out of the water. I wonder if my suit would stay put... could be dramatic if it didn't.

"Rockflopper Penguin" or "Rocktumbler Penguin" might be more on the mark. Presumably their colonies ring with the cries of "I'm o.k.! I just---oops, OW! No, no...I'm o.k.!"
