I used to think it was a terrible place because it was full of technoid geeks and social outcasts (i.e. people like myself).
Then the rest of the world showed up, and I realized how quaint that belief was.comment:www.metafilter.com,2016:site.163167-6782529Sat, 29 Oct 2016 10:51:09 -0800eadBy: Oyéah

<i>I am an official Nice Guy and I am also a True Nerd. ☯92JUN</i>
Nah these are cute and pertinent, but fake or pulled from our current intarwebs and posted as if. I was online in 1990 and no one started using capitalized "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nice_guy#The_.22nice_guy.22_construct">Nice Guy</a>" until the 2000s.
Another dead giveaway is that there's no "there r no women on teh internet lol". I suspect it's less the modern concept of Nice Guy(TM) and more that ironic/emphatic capitalising is A Thing. One which I do Too Much come to think of it.comment:www.metafilter.com,2016:site.163167-6782642Sat, 29 Oct 2016 13:26:37 -0800comealongpoleBy: [insert clever name here]

The newsgroup post discusses "Nice Guy" usage in reference to it in terms of relationships and rejection. Including pointing out some groups use it with an added (tm). So it was a thing. And I remember Nice Guy being a term I've known my adult life, so the time fits. I think what HAS changed is our recognition from the idea that the Nice Guy is just a hapless guy that can't get women, to the more recent understanding that the Nice Guy sees women as objects you insert friendship coins into in return for sex. Basically the idea has shifted that the Nice Guy is not really nice. Or at least there is a wider recognition of such now.comment:www.metafilter.com,2016:site.163167-6782650Sat, 29 Oct 2016 13:37:05 -0800[insert clever name here]By: meinvt

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
