No ordinary grandmas or snakes here. A group of snorkelling grandmothers who swim up to 3km five days a week have uncovered a large population of venomous sea snakes in a bay in the Baie des Citrons, Noumea where scientists once believed they were rare. "Great snorkelling grannies!!" would be an excellent exclamation of shock or surprise - especially, say, when one encounters venomous sea snakes.comment:www.metafilter.com,2019:site.183785-7812652Fri, 25 Oct 2019 09:48:58 -0800Greg_AceBy: GoblinHoney

That's a lot of fit grannies, that photo in sillouhette you wouldn't be able to guess any adult age properly. It's great that these folks have helped make some discoveries that professional outfits would need a budget and grant to do themselves.comment:www.metafilter.com,2019:site.183785-7812667Fri, 25 Oct 2019 10:04:02 -0800GoblinHoneyBy: Windopaene

I thought this was going to be about the Japanese ama divers - worth reading about if you've never heard of them. They're female freedivers who collect pearls, well into old age. They appeared in Japan with Sue Perkins recently and I've never seen a more chill, happy group of people in my life.
(That's an iplayer link, it's hard to find anything more universal but there is this Facebook clip.)comment:www.metafilter.com,2019:site.183785-7812938Fri, 25 Oct 2019 13:31:39 -0800penguin pieBy: Horkus

This works well with my hobby of adding "...and doomed us all" to the end of science headlines.comment:www.metafilter.com,2019:site.183785-7813089Fri, 25 Oct 2019 17:38:02 -0800HorkusBy: archy

I got so angry at the characterization of these women by their reproductive status... until I read the article and discovered they called themselves 'the fantastic grandmothers'.comment:www.metafilter.com,2019:site.183785-7813259Sat, 26 Oct 2019 06:00:31 -0800archyBy: soy bean

I thought this might be about the Haenyeo, whose diving prowess was the backbone of their small Korean island's semi-matriarchal society. Also worth reading about!comment:www.metafilter.com,2019:site.183785-7814204Mon, 28 Oct 2019 11:19:17 -0800soy bean
¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
