Indiana restricts violent arcade games No more Mortal Kombat for kids. I'm sure we are all aware of the many dangerous games out there. Didn't anyone make a point about the good things these games offer Indiana kids.post:www.metafilter.com,2000:site.2535Thu, 20 Jul 2000 09:24:22 -0800johngamesgaminglawsarcadegamesviolencebrokenlinkBy: Mr. skullhead

I think we should raise kids in some kind of sterile Skinner box until they turn 18. That way no one will have to worry about evil outside influences like TV, movies, books, albums, video games or any kind of free thinking in general. comment:www.metafilter.com,2000:site.2535-13622Thu, 20 Jul 2000 18:01:33 -0800Mr. skullheadBy: chiXy

I believe they are overlooking those extremely dangerous Looney Toons on television -- for years I dropped acme anvils on my friends before I realized the injuries were real and permanent.comment:www.metafilter.com,2000:site.2535-13624Thu, 20 Jul 2000 18:27:01 -0800chiXyBy: fable

They should ban cigarette ads from TV, too! If they'd done that back in the day, then I probably wouldn't have been smoking at age six.
But Joe Camel was just SOOO much hipper than Mickey Mouse.comment:www.metafilter.com,2000:site.2535-13632Thu, 20 Jul 2000 20:39:33 -0800fableBy: john

It's just a little scary that such a law could actually be passed. The movement to have our goverment raise our children for us is gaining more ground all the time.
Teenage violence is a problem that comes from things more serious then violent video games, music, and movies. When we miss the target like this we ignore and therefore perpetuate the real factors. Parental neglect and parental abuse allow violent images to sink in without any guidence.
People tend to underestimate children and stigmatize violence, death, and sex to them. Parents own difficulities with these subjects are then passed to their children.
I think it comes from adults remembering their own weaknesses as children and refusing to believe children of today could handle things better.
We carry on a legacy of lies. The Easter bunny, Santa, etc. are myths that that promise that the lie is worth it.
In the end, there are a lot of children that have no one to guide them about what they see. Law's like these do not help to resolve the heart of the problem.comment:www.metafilter.com,2000:site.2535-13651Fri, 21 Jul 2000 00:51:05 -0800john
¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
