This week, my 10-year-old honor student composed a list of proposed social studies fair projects. He included MLK. I asked him why? His answer: "Because everybody that does him always gets an A."comment:www.metafilter.com,2003:site.27828-542164Sat, 23 Aug 2003 05:04:55 -0800mischiefBy: amberglow

While your kid may pick the project just to get an A, he or she will be learning valuable lessons about an important American who helped make the country better at the same time, so good.
We've come a long way, but not far enough.comment:www.metafilter.com,2003:site.27828-542181Sat, 23 Aug 2003 06:47:42 -0800amberglowBy: jack_mo

Like amberglow says, not far enough.
Worryingly, here in the UK we seem to be going backwards, if you take prison statistics as an indicator, and I think they're a good one.comment:www.metafilter.com,2003:site.27828-542239Sat, 23 Aug 2003 10:25:15 -0800jack_moBy: Ayn Marx

I Have [ka-ching!] a Dream [ka-ching!]

That's a good thing, so long as he doesn't also get a lesson on lawsuits from greedy family members.
Are the King's grabbing any royalties from the current festivities?comment:www.metafilter.com,2003:site.27828-542247Sat, 23 Aug 2003 10:52:27 -0800Ayn MarxBy: amberglow

What does how relatives and descendants act have any bearing on Martin Luther King's speeches and actions? You can dismiss him because of them, but it's your (and ours as a society's) loss.comment:www.metafilter.com,2003:site.27828-542248Sat, 23 Aug 2003 11:00:55 -0800amberglowBy: Ayn Marx

I'm not dismissing MLK, but the actions of his descendants are eroding both his memory and the ability to celebrate and promote his message.
How many people now associate "I Have a Dream" with a phone service? How many people are afraid to quote from the speech because they fear a lawsuit?
I bet the angular momentum of King spinning in his grave could have powered NYC.comment:www.metafilter.com,2003:site.27828-542253Sat, 23 Aug 2003 11:11:14 -0800Ayn MarxBy: WLW

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
