Mr. Gonopolis and his 12 Holsteins. It's December 24th and Santa gets the measles. Mr. Gonopolis, a bumbling dairy farmer from Minnesota and member of the Emergency Substitute Santa Claus Corps, gets the call and hitches up his 12 Holstein cows. Following a custom of naming cows after people he admires, for the 20th anniversary edition of his children's book Uncle Hyggly renamed one of the cows "Oprah" and got into some hot water. Even so, this book is a welcome alternative to other cow temptation (NSF Farmers).post:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.47893Wed, 28 Dec 2005 12:38:04 -0800luckypozzochildrensantaholsteinbookBy: Simon!

How is he in hot water? Nowhere is it suggested that any legal action has been made, or that Oprah has even noticed his book. In fact, your 'hot water' link is to his own press release hyping the book.
This sounds like pretty cut and dry piece of ugly advertising. Which is a shame, because the book looks cute.comment:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.47893-1155168Wed, 28 Dec 2005 12:47:46 -0800Simon!By: mr_crash_davis

Ok, that latest link was udderly reprehensible. It crashed my Firefox. You seem to have a steak in this thread, so maybe if you spend some time ruminating you can come up with something to wow us.comment:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.47893-1155254Wed, 28 Dec 2005 13:32:09 -0800OmieWiseBy: OmieWise

Mr. Gonopolis...
This is a pet peeve of mine-- every time people want to make a name "foreign sounding," they use a form that they've heard but have no ideal how it's spelled. E.g., Nick "Andopolis" from Freaks and Geeks and George "Papadapolis" from Webster. The suffix of the word (it's a patronym) is spelled -poulos. It should be Gonopoulos. Dear Mr. Gonopolis
When the cows come home, stop by. I bet you could use some milking yourself.
Hugs

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
