The media begins to awaken. Recently, Tom Curley, the President and CEO of Associated Press lashed out at the absurd conditions surrounding the detention of Bilal Hussein. After being detained for over 18 months, the US Military has finally decided to charge him, but nobody can say for what, or when, or why, or what evidence might be brought forth. Strangely, Mr. Curley writes this without a hint of the irony present in being caught in the net of lies, deception and constructed memory hole that the media has participated in the creation of. There's more than one story out there where a journalist (or fellow-traveler) has been caught up in shenanigans by the US gov't. The injured tone of these articles always reminds me of Homer Simpson: "But this is ME we're talking about!"comment:www.metafilter.com,2007:site.66895-1926094Mon, 26 Nov 2007 18:23:25 -0800DUBy: mullingitover

Oh, so we're using the Iraqi justice system now? Great, I look forward to fair trials for the Blackwater crew who went crazy gunning down those civilians in Baghdad.
I keed, I keed. Don't worry, Blackwater. The US Government won't let you face justice anytime soon.comment:www.metafilter.com,2007:site.66895-1926099Mon, 26 Nov 2007 18:29:18 -0800mullingitoverBy: Huplescat

I think DU is suggesting that the press has overall been much more willing to toe the government line when this happens to non-journalists.comment:www.metafilter.com,2007:site.66895-1926354Mon, 26 Nov 2007 22:42:51 -0800[expletive deleted]By: lupus_yonderboy

I think everyone can agree that the behavior of the US Forces is beyond egregious. What disturbs me most about this is how no one has resigned in protest. I can't help but feel that everyone along the chain of command in this case, from the Butcher in Chief on down see nothing wrong with using the criminal justice system to blatantly intimidate the press. Fuck Godwin. This is fascism.comment:www.metafilter.com,2007:site.66895-1926371Mon, 26 Nov 2007 22:54:34 -0800[expletive deleted]By: rhymer

I think the quiescence of the media is only half the story. Whenever anything awful is published, there's a notable lack of real public outcry. One has to wonder what the public reaction would be if the Watergate story broke today.comment:www.metafilter.com,2007:site.66895-1926433Tue, 27 Nov 2007 01:24:26 -0800rhymerBy: pax digita

When I was explaining to my US-citizenship students how impeachment works, according to the US Constitution, I flashed on how quaint and inconseqential a mere obstruction-of-justice charge seemed alongside...what, updwards of half a million lives since we invaded? ¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
