The best-known version of that joyful ode to getting smashed, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/dupree_champion_jack/384574/lyrics.jhtml">Drinkin' Wine</a> <a href="http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1592">Spo-Dee-O-Dee</a>, would surely be the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv2FYHa5ZMU">Jerry Lee Lewis rendition</a>, and Memphis rockabilly singer <a href="http://www.burnette-rock.com/JohnnyBurnette.htm">Johnny</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Burnette">Burnette</a> recorded a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJaBcIcD5ao">hopping little version</a> of the tune as well. But the song was written and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP0b1DOJF0g">originally recorded</a> by <a href="http://music.yahoo.com/ar-308077-bio--Stick-McGhee">Stick</a> <a href="http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=13731990">(aka "Sticks")</a> <a href="http://www.hoyhoy.com/artists/stick.htm">McGhee</a>, who adapted it from a chant he learned during his stint in the Army. And yes, "spo-dee-o-dee" was a substitute for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motherfucker">another word</a>, which, though fine for the Army, wasn't exactly radio friendly. Stick wrote a few other tunes in celebration of the alcoholic beverage, including <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpjGNHUGmvQ">"Six To Eight" and "Jungle Juice"</a>. And as has been pointed out <a href="http://www.metafilter.com/48767/Wine-SpodeeODee-Drinkin-Wine">previously</a>, the song title was likely the inspiration for the alcoholic concoction known as the "<a href="http://www.answers.com/topic/spodi">spodi</a>". More from Johnny Burnette:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdbsm-cHZwk">You're Sixteen</a>, which wasn't written by Burnette, but his version did reasonably well, charting at number 8 in 1960. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You're_Sixteen">song</a> was later a top 40 hit (straight to #1) for Ringo Starr after the Beatles' breakup.
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHFvst_fKkMQ">Lonesome Train</a>. This track (no pun intended) has a <i>great</i> rockabilly sound: classic spareness, great guitar line accompaniment, slapback echo on the backbeat, and a vocal that cuts like a knife.
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaX5960iRyQ">Rock Billy Boogie</a>. <i>"I know a little spot on the edge of town, where you can really pick 'em up and set 'em down"</i>comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70803-2079495Sun, 13 Apr 2008 22:28:22 -0800flapjax at midniteBy: P.o.B.

The version by Stick McGhee, a sensational hit, was among the first few recordings released by a tiny startup company called Atlantic Records, without it they may have gone the way of legions of other companies consisting of a couple of guys and a kitchen table.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70803-2079601Mon, 14 Apr 2008 03:49:05 -0800StickyCarpetBy: jonmc

Footnote: a buncha goofs called Donny Baker and the Dimensionals did a <a href="http://www.rockabilly.nl/lyrics1/d0062.htm">version for the non-boozing set</a>. I've heard it. It's OK.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70803-2079609Mon, 14 Apr 2008 04:03:56 -0800jonmcBy: EarBucket

Pretty good versions also include the Howling Diablos (with Kid Rock!) and Richard Thompson, on his 1000 Years Of Popular Music album.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70803-2079649Mon, 14 Apr 2008 04:57:27 -0800EarBucketBy: not_on_display

I knew Pere Ubu did a song called "Drinking Wine Spodyody" (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOD_0e93haE">snippet</a>), but never knew the original. Thanks for once again opening the doors and letting the fresh air in, motherfucker!comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70803-2080713Mon, 14 Apr 2008 17:48:45 -0800not_on_displayBy: flapjax at midnite

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
