Through some mix of fate and outrageous self-promotion, I managed to finagle an invitation to a show this season- the one night this week I actually had something to do I couldn't put off. Bah! That's what I get for not looking at my calendar. Next season I'm IN, I swear, if I have to scale the tents and rappel in.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.85060-2741737Tue, 15 Sep 2009 11:23:43 -0800ThePinkSuperheroBy: kathrineg

It's more the fact that the fashion industry chooses to exploit these people for those reasons, otherwise why have a "model directory" where you can search by the body part or physical feature the model is known for? Another thing is the industry has in the past 5-7 years or so, gone for a certain homogeneous look in order to further the "model as clothes hanger, do not notice her face" notion. So there's a whole host of Eastern European virtual clones out there on the runway (though this has been changing slightly).
I enjoy fashion, but there are aspects that are up for question, as well as ways to poke fun at that industry's choices.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.85060-2742339Tue, 15 Sep 2009 17:12:04 -0800cmgonzalezBy: kathrineg

The fact that so many are that young is a key factor. Besides the more superficial issue of 16 year olds selling clothes to 30 year olds, there's not a little exploitation or pressure happening. A lot of these girls are living a dream and they are making more money than they could've ever imagined, seeing the world, and all that, but there's a lot of damage that can be done. See Crystal Renn, Ali Michael, or more sadly, Ruslana Korshunova, among others.
That said, the frilliness and the fantasy, the creativity on display, and other parts of fashion are fun and the part I enjoy. The whole model as clothes hanger and not human being thing is something I don't; it's dehumanizing. Would also be nice to see a variety of shapes, sizes, ages, and heights out there. Celebrating that fun, creative aspect in a more human, relatable way.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.85060-2742433Tue, 15 Sep 2009 18:11:11 -0800cmgonzalezBy: zarq

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
