<a href="http://www.theamericanscholar.org/living-on-500000-a-year/">But most years were pretty close to $24,000. Despite his high income, he was not able to save or, as he said, "amass capital."</a> Fitzgerald reported every dollar he had entered in his ledger. He was impeccably honest in his reporting. But Fitzgerald did press tax conventions on some occasions. On his 1924 tax return, he deducted $2,450 as a business expense for a "trip to Europe for the purpose of obtaining material for stories, etc." <em>The American Scholar</em> examines F. Perhaps you sould just construct the coffee table out of bar tabs. It would be one sturdy, large table...comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.86078-2793899Fri, 23 Oct 2009 08:01:10 -0800msbutahBy: rusty

Nathaniel West died in a car accident on his way to F. Scott Fitzgerald's funeral. Nothing to do with this article, really. It's just an odd thing that happened.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.86078-2793916Fri, 23 Oct 2009 08:15:09 -0800rustyBy: FelliniBlank

When I read <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1573226211/metafilter-20/ref=nosim/">Max Perkins: Editor of Genius</a></em> by A. Scott Berg, it was really striking the number of times Fitzgerald came to his editor for loans. He was always taking advances on his advances, and seemed never to have enough money. He basically used his publisher as a bank.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.86078-2793985Fri, 23 Oct 2009 08:55:00 -0800ocherdracoBy: cisko

Um, well, that <em>is</em> a business expense. So much so, in fact, that grants are regularly awarded for that very purpose.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.86078-2794079Fri, 23 Oct 2009 09:36:12 -0800Sys RqBy: geoff.

Sure it is nebulous, but the IRS would disagree with you (as they did with Fitzgerald). Just because grants are awarded for it does not mean it is a deductible expense. Going to Kabul to write a story on the Taliban? Sure. Going to the French Riviera to get ideas for a story? Such reasoning could really be applied to any expense and you'd have chaos.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.86078-2794209Fri, 23 Oct 2009 10:43:22 -0800geoff.By: geoff.

<i>Here is John Scalzi's take...</i>
Hm. I have no problem with Fitzgerald's income being 20x the average 'beginner' SF writer publishing in, like, <i>Analog</i> magazine today. Seems about right, actually.
Yes, that's only because he became bold, italic, F-is-for <b><i>Fucking F. Scott Fitzgerald</i></b> with some posthumous fame, but that just makes it into one of those (rare) cases that the old invisible hand of the cosmos actually things pretty much correct.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.86078-2795169Sat, 24 Oct 2009 03:48:41 -0800rokusanBy: rokusan

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
