Now and then when my Super Mario Brothers ringtone pipes up, I've enjoyed looking around and sharing that slow Fight Club nod with the nearby stranger who knows exactly what that's about. Sometimes from some surprising people, too; once from a very serious-looking young woman with a laywer's briefcase and what must have been a $2000 suit, another time with a wizened-looking elderly man in a turban.

I find him a touch annoying, but he has an obvious enthusiasm for what he does, and that can translate into success. Hell, Letterman started off as a small market weatherman.

I suspect in 20 years, this guy is going to either be on a late night show, or have the most bitchin Subaru dealership in Traverse City.

The Smurfs reference kind of threw me for a minute, actually. Is he old enough to have watched the Smurfs on TV? ...Wow, it was on until 1989, so I guess so. And won an Emmy for "outstanding children's entertainment series"? Some of these awards don't hold up so well when you watch them later....

Nutty weathermen/weatherwomen is a thing, isn't it? People love to know about the weather and yet, paradoxically, it's boring. So there's always been these folks who are quirky and nutty and make a name for themselves that way.

Rogers Coleman-Wilson is from Sierra Leone. He fell in love with a Polish woman, moved to Poland, taught himself the language, and is now an idiosyncratic, and by all accounts popular, weatherman. I (or someone) should probably do an FPP about him rather than hijacking this thread.

My notification tones are all ponies. It's kinda fun to play Spot The Brony and see who looks up in recognition. The other day in my office, I heard someone's ringtone; it was the da-na-na-naaaaaa! from the Zelda games. It was a customer, who was in his 60s. That made my day.

I know what you mean. I used to have Super Mario sound effects for various notifications, with the theme being the actual ringtone. But then, my future brother-in-law has a very similar setup, so I changed mine to Legend of Zelda notifications/ringtone a while back. Arguably cooler, depending on who you ask.

Anyway, I was called in for Jury Duty last week. I had been there about an hour or so, busily reading MetaFilter on my phone while waiting for my number to be called, when my wife sent me a text, which emitted a loud LoZ "secret found" sound. The girl next to me (slightly overdressed for the crowd that gets pulled in for St. Louis City Jury Duty) laughed, while the guy in front of me turned around and smiled. The three of us started talking from then on - three people in the middle of the oddest cross-section of the human race outside of the DMV, brought together by random coincidence of seat selection and Legend of Zelda.

Funny enough, all three of us got called for the same selection panel later that day, with two of us making the final jury.
