Given that today putting a DO NOT ENTER sign with accompanying symbol of why, such as lightening bolts, only makes some people want to see inside, makes this look like a very futile project. All of these suggestions look like future tourist attractions or archeological digs. What¡¯s wrong with just burying the stuff really, really deep in some desolate wasteland and hope that future humans (or whatever) have the smarts to do a hazardous waste analysis before building or doing anything else there. Given our record for doing that now, doesn¡¯t give much hope...

Liberally salt the ground around it with a mixture of various selenium and tellurium compounds, including glasses that will break down very slowly.

Not only will it smell terrible, anybody who ingests a small amount will get sick and smell terrible until it works its way out of their system. Selenium and tellurium hydrides are both more toxic than cyanide, but the smell is reputed to be absolutely repulsive well below thresholds of toxicity.

I like a couple of these a lot as serious proposals. For instance the one with a dune of empty oil drums - that's a little toxic on it's own, so future explorers will be cautious from the start. One could build increasingly toxic layers, making it clear that what's at the bottom is really rotten.

The other idea I liked a lot was the "some true, some false". If we can foster uncertainty and distrust, future explorers will be more cautious. Of course, the whole reason for this project is we can't count on language, so we'd need to find some other way to be confusing. Maybe some obviously incorrect, simple calculations mixed in with correct ones to show that we should know better.

By and large, nuclear power and its waste kills less people than fossil fuels do. Even renewables like wind, hydro, and solar require messing around with some heavy metals and can cause health problems in the miners and factory workers. Some people still believe that nuclear power has merit, whether as a part of a temporary scheme where we wean off fossil fuels, or as part of the grid going forward.

At this point, IMO, we're largely past where nuclear power makes much sense, but we do need to manage the waste already generated for the rest of time.

"Clean them up" is what's been done, but once they're clean and stored, we need to remind people to not disturb that storage.
