I love this. And I absolutely want to keep referring to them as pay phones even though they are free to use. posted by JanetLand at 5:22 AM on September 5 [4 favorites]
More like Pay it forward Phones, no? No. But still.
This is great! I would love to know if there is a way to contribute funding support for this very worthwhile project. posted by I_Love_Bananas at 5:29 AM on September 5 [1 favorite]
RandTel #3 is a rotary phone! It's a free, "100% solar powered," rotary pay phone. If it were installed in a Subaru you would have to call Bernie Sanders to report unlawful levels of Vermont. posted by The Bellman at 7:55 AM on September 5 [8 favorites]
Patrick Schlott often finds himself in a cellular dead zone during his drive
Yes. A long-running problem in the state.
When I described how bad connectivity was in my town, a government official told me to apply for a federal grant to set up a 2G network. posted by doctornemo at 9:05 AM on September 5 [2 favorites]

- Now our town has no-pay phones.
- No pay phones? Well, I guess that's not surprising in the cell era.
- No, no-pay phones!
- A double negative, we do have payphones?
- No payphones, only no-pay phones.

There are still, against all odds, 3 functioning pay phones within a 10 minute walk radius from my home in Ottawa. There were 4 until a couple years back when one of them was smucked by snow plow and never replaced.
I mean some of us used free pay phones in the 1990s but this is a more community focused version of the ol box culture. Big fan here. posted by cobaltnine at 10:57 AM on September 5
This seems a little like the guy in Yellowknife with the satellite phone business who, when he realized he had to evacuate, took his stick with him and left a tail of cell phone stations on that long dangerous road so people had a chance to stay in contact. I hope he¡¯s IK. posted by GenjiandProust at 11:55 AM on September 5 [3 favorites]
RandTel is very excellent. I hope I get a chance to use one of their phones.
Since Dr. Twist mentioned Futel: Futel extends beyond Portland, with phones in Seattle and Long Beach, Washington, as well as Ypsilanti and Detroit , Michigan. The previous link includes the in-bound calling numbers of Futel phones, if you want to ring a random phone on the street and see if someone answers. posted by Headfullofair at 11:56 AM on September 5 [2 favorites]
tuesday, I was doing laundry near the gas station that blares Dvorak and Paganini, doing the laundromat meander, I went to the message board and by the board was a payphone. I looked at the pay phone, thought about it, and thought, well maybe.

Arrive at Penn Station, check to know which train you'd catch. Then to the huge payphone bank to call home, to tell people when to pick you up. posted by Goofyy at 12:20 PM on September 6 [4 favorites]
In Australia, all ~15,000 (former) pay phones are now free for all calls. I doubt this was done out of any community spirit, but because they're used so rarely that it's cheaper to make them free than bear the cost of emptying them. Many of these are now also free WiFi hotspots. posted by dg at 9:12 PM on September 7 [1 favorite]

¡°Why?¡± asked Larry, in his practical way. "Sergeant," admonished the Lieutenant, "you mustn't use such language to your men." "Yes," accorded Shorty; "we'll git some rations from camp by this evenin'. Cap will look out for that. Meanwhile, I'll take out two or three o' the boys on a scout into the country, to see if we can't pick up something to eat." Marvor, however, didn't seem satisfied. "The masters always speak truth," he said. "Is this what you tell me?" MRS. B.: Why are they let, then? My song is short. I am near the dead. So Albert's letter remained unanswered¡ªCaro felt that Reuben was unjust. She had grown very critical of him lately, and a smarting dislike coloured her [Pg 337]judgments. After all, it was he who had driven everybody to whatever it was that had disgraced him. He was to blame for Robert's theft, for Albert's treachery, for Richard's base dependence on the Bardons, for George's death, for Benjamin's disappearance, for Tilly's marriage, for Rose's elopement¡ªit was a heavy load, but Caro put the whole of it on Reuben's shoulders, and added, moreover, the tragedy of her own warped life. He was a tyrant, who sucked his children's blood, and cursed them when they succeeded in breaking free. "Tell my lord," said Calverley, "I will attend him instantly." HoME²Ô¾®¿Õ·¬ºÅѸÀ×Á´½Ó
